Common Core Language Arts & Social Studies
Grade 5 Curriculum
The Common Core National Standards and NC Essential Standards lend themselves to a rigorous and relevant fifth grade program. Fifth grade is a great year for solidifying all of the academic pieces while preparing for the upcoming middle school years.
Reading
Your fifth grader should be reading meaningful novels with relative fluency at home and at school. The focus of reading class changes from teaching the logistics of reading and focuses closely on the interpretive art of reading. Your child will be challenged to read many different genres with a critical and interpretive eye. Expect your child to be doing a lot of independent reading. He or she will be completing work that requires analysis of characters, plot, setting, and text structure as they relate to the author's purpose in writing the book. This year, student's will be required to prove their opinions with examples and quotes from the text.
